It’s that wonderful time of year when zucchini jus

It’s that wonderful time of year when zucchini just starts showing up. Coworkers leave it in piles in the break room. Neighbors beg you to please for the love of God take some zucchini. Mysteriously there are seven pounds of zucchini that seemingly spawned directly into your fridge like an Immaculate Zucception. It’s the rickroll of garden vegetables. A zucc-roll, perhaps.

Welcome to Unsolicited Zucchini Season in the Midwest.

But wait, you’re thinking, that’s not a zucchini, it’s a Mexican squash! And you are correct, but this same neighbor already gifted me a whole collection of actual zucchini and when I mentioned zucchini bread he insisted they would be better for pan frying. He deemed this Mexican squash more appropriate. 😂

Did you know that Chicago and Paris are sister cities? And sisters tend to share everything, so it was probably just a matter of time before the iconic green Parisian park chairs would find their way to Grant Park and Buckingham Fountain!

Inspired by the Luxembourg Garden in Paris, this is a @chicagoparks pilot program running through October, supported by @lollapalooza (my tickets were clearly lost in the mail, right??) and @businessfrance.

The aviation community is notoriously conservative

The aviation community is notoriously conservative, but if you dig below the surface, it doesn’t take long to realize that pilots are a no nonsense bunch – I haven’t seen a single T-— flag or hat at Airventure in the last two years. Everyone converges on Oshkosh every July simply because they love to fly, and when the community comes together, I see more and more growing pockets of progressivism that give me joy, and entire movements happening that give me hope.

One of those is @elevatedaxs , an organization that launched in 2022 in response to the extreme healthcare bans that were popping up across the country. A network of volunteer pilots transports passengers in need of abortion and gender affirming care, at no cost. Everyone deserves bodily autonomy and access to health care, and Elevated Access is working to provide it.

While I was at Airventure, I connected with Mike Bonanza, founder of Elevated Access. I’m lucky to count Mike as a friend and I’m immensely proud of him and the work he’s done to bring this network to life. It’s important work that reminds me how lucky I am to live in a state that is fighting to protect our rights rather than strip them away. And I see the impact of that work when I look around my own community and meet a newly minted trans Chicagoan from Texas, Idaho, Florida etc. seemingly every week. I love that they’ve found their way here. Not everyone in those places can leave.

And so I wanted to connect my community to an org that is leveraging one of my loves as a tool in the fight for healthcare access and bodily autonomy. Because I think you should know that there is a network of pilots out there who are stepping up to help.

@remingtonschicago is a classic American grill with a slightly upscale feel on Michigan Avenue. Cloud Gate is across the street and the Chicago Cultural Center is a half block north — it’s perfectly located for a nicer lunch (or dinner) right in the middle of everything.

My lunch at Remington’s included:

🥬 Crispy brussel sprouts
🌽 Iron skillet corn bread

This work-friendly coffee shop in Andersonville is near the top of my list of the best cafes for working remotely in Chicago, so save this post to bookmark it.

@colectivocoffee is a small regional chain with a few locations in Chicago, and I’ll be honest, I tend to avoid chains when I want coffee. But it’s a local-ish chain, has a strong focus on fair-trade coffee, and, well, it’s honestly kind of amazing for working with a laptop. And being a quick bike ride means that this is an easy pick for visiting on repeat.

The lettuce to chicken ratio looks good, so let’s just put some dressing on before taking a bite…

And let’s take a moment to appreciate the croutons because… there actually aren’t any! It has breadcrumbs, I believe toasted with butter and Parmesan. And I have thoughts, because this swap is VERY good. It lets the crunch be evenly distributed throughout the wrap. There are no dry bites of irregularly-sized croutons that cut the roof of your mouth. It’s quite nice!

Verdict: I like it! Though admittedly, I don’t have a lot of depth on Chicago’s Chicken Caesar Wrap game, but the croutons-for-breadcrumbs swap is smart and delicious, so I’ll be stealing that.

Save this post for the next time you need to “get work done” downtown. In quotes because be honest, does anyone REALLY get work done at @riverrouxbistro or are we all too distracted by the boats?

I visited River Roux for my series on working from Chicago cafes after it was suggested by a follower. It’s a sleek space, obviously built to cater to remote workers, but I thought it was a little expensive and the 90 minute WiFi limit isn’t my favorite.

But if I was a business traveler? I’d be down here every day of my visit with the corporate card in hand.

Personally, I’m learning that when I need to lock in, my vibe is a neighborhood coffee shop with a little art, vintage patina, and a barista who’s loaded up a playlist with impeccable taste.
